Working with LHWRP (6/21-6/25)
What a wonderful week. We saw some unbelievably special places. I’ll try to piece it together as best I can. I’ve been keeping a little moleskin journal around with me, so I write in it occasionally when I get a second to sit and think. I’ll include some pieces of that this week.  Day 1 (6/21): As you guys know, I was really fretting about water and food for five days of...

Dawn Patrol and Costco for 3 Hours
Early rise this morning allowed us some great surf time before the day started. We spent around 4 hours in the water this morning, it was beautiful. The rest of the day….ehhh, let’s just say it was different. We are just finishing up planning out the logistics for next week’s camping trip. Here’s the scoop: We work with Maui Restoration Group this coming week. Way up in...

Twin Falls
We woke up this morning and ambled out of the house around 11. We picked up Kaika and headed North East, towards Twin Falls. Twin Falls is a series of freshwater pools with waterfalls you can jump off of. It’s a pretty popular spot here, but we managed to find a spot that wasn’t too crowded. The jump was pretty high. Not the highest I’ve done, but definitely a bit sketchy because...

Team Training Week (Finally) Done!
Whoa what a hectic week! This post is gonna be a bit more bland than the last because I’m exhausted! So I’ll keep it stripped of the fancy stuff and do it a bit more stream of my faint consciousness/ highlight reel. Here goes it: It started at 4am Monday (6/14) morning, driving to Maui airport to meet all of our kids for the first time and shuffle them along to Oahu for team training....

Sunday Before the Storm
We’re hanging out at Ka’ena’s auntie’s awesome house today, watching the Laker’s game and calling all the members to make sure they’ve got everything for tomorrow. Thought I’d share with you a couple pictures from the day. Her auntie and uncle live on the west side of the valley. They live on ag land, so they have to grow things on their property....

Team Leader Training Week
Last Monday I arrived at New Hope Diamond Head, the place we’d be having team leader training till Thursday. I got there about two hours early because Uncle Cal wasn’t sure how traffic would be. I was by far the first person there. About 30 mins after I introduced myself to the coordinators and sat myself down, the first group from the neighboring islands walked in. First was Nick,...

WatchWatch
Here’s a short shaky clip of part of the trail I was talking about. Hopefully you get the idea. The place is a dream. I also dubbed the audio with a track of me having a heart attack if you listen closely…

WatchWatch
This is taken from the loop. At the start of the video, at about the middle of the adjacent ridge, where the ridge intersects with the ocean horizon, you can see a peak in the distance. That is Diamond Head, one of the two now dormant volcanoes that formed Oahu. From where I’m at, it’s about 13 miles as the crow flies. The end of the video shows a distant ridge that begins to descend. Where the...

Low Down, Royal Summit Runnin', and First...
So the low down on what I’m doing this summer. I’ll be working for HYCC again, but as a team leader and on the island of Maui. Another team leader and I will be guiding a group of 3 guys and 4 girls, between the ages of 15 and 17. We’ll be going to a different site every week to learn about conservation. Last time I did this, as a team member, it involved a lot invasive species...

On the Move
What a great start to my summer adventures! My travel from Gainesville to Oahu was much more interesting than normal. I stayed up all night on the 3rd, seeing the last of some close friends for a couple months. All nighters in such fashion are always well-worth it, but this one left me more exhausted than usual! The crisp early morning hour of 3am came around and I said my last goodbyes. Now,...
